In 2025, the Commonwealth of Nations marks two key milestones:
๐น 60 years since the creation of its Secretariat
๐น 30 years since the launch of the Millbrook Action Programme on the Harare Declaration
At a time when democracy and international norms face growing threats from populist regimes, disinformation, and weakened rule of law, this conference invites scholars and practitioners to critically examine the role of the Commonwealth in promoting democratic governance and international cooperation.
๐ Key Themes:
-
Definitions of Democracy – What do Commonwealth policies and declarations reveal about its democratic vision?
-
Mediation and Consensus-Building – How has the Commonwealth used its “good offices” to resolve conflict?
-
International Norms & Hegemony – What role can the Commonwealth play in global governance amid rising hegemonies?
We welcome interdisciplinary contributions from fields including history, political science, law, sociology, development studies, geography, diplomacy, and international relations. Case studies from the Global South and comparative or pan-Commonwealth analyses are especially encouraged.
