  • Funded Writing Workshop on International Politics in Africa
We are pleased to announce an upcoming fully funded Academic Writing Workshop, aimed at fostering scholarly exchange and supporting the development of high-quality academic publications on International Politics in Africa. The workshop is generously funded by the British Academy. We invite applications from African early career scholars who wish to participate in this focused and collaborative environment. Workshop Overview The workshop will bring together a select group of academics to work intensively on draft papers, receive feedback from peers and journal editors, and engage in sessions designed to strengthen academic writing skills and research methodology. Participants will have the opportunity to present and refine a paper intended for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Participants’ research should focus on international politics in Africa broadly conceived, i.e., the empirical study and understanding of how African societies, citizens, governments, supranational institutions, and non-governmental organisations experience international politics. The workshop has the following three objectives: To evaluate how Africa's political, social and economic history can contribute to the development of an African International Relations school.  To review the appropriateness of different methodologies that can be applied when empirically evaluating international politics in Africa. To consider effective strategies of publishing research on Africa’s international relations in internationally reputable outlets, and to respond to methodological training needs to close publishing gaps.  Eligibility Applicants must meet the following criteria: ●      Hold a PhD in Political Science/International relations or be in the process of completing one. ●      Be a scholar currently employed at a higher education institution in Africa. ●      Be prepared to present and workshop a draft paper during the event. ●      In line with the funder’s guidelines, applicants should be based in higher education institutions in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania, or in a least developed country in Africa.    Application Requirements Interested applicants are asked to submit the following materials: Cover Letter (max 500 words): Outlining your interest in the workshop, your current research focus, and what you hope to gain from the experience. Abstract (500 words max): A summary of the paper you intend to present and develop during the workshop. The abstract should include the research question, methodology, and expected contribution to the field. • African Critical Inquiry Programme announces the 2026 ACIP Workshop award
2026 African Critical Inquiry Workshop: Revisiting and Reimagining “Imvo Zabantsundu”             The African Critical Inquiry Programme (ACIP) is pleased to announce that the 2026 ACIP Workshop will be Revisiting and Reimagining “Imvo Zabantsundu”. The project was proposed by organisersAthambile Masola (Historical Studies), Litheko Modisane (Film and Media Studies), Sanele kaNtshingana (African Languages), and  Wanga Gambushe (African Languages) at University of Cape Town and Sisanda Nkoala (Linguistics) of University of the Western Cape. Revisiting and Reimagining “Imvo Zabantsundu” will take place in Cape Town, South Africa in March 2026. Revisiting and Reimagining Imvo Zabantsundu              Revisiting and Reimagining “Imvo Zabantsundu” will be a two day immersion workshop delving into the newspaper Imvo Zabantsundu, the first Black-owned newspaper in South Africa. Established in 1884 by John Tengo Jabavu (1859–1921), this newspaper not only laid the foundation for Black journalism but also generated a print culture that was challenging the colonial print culture that was emerging in the region. The newspaper has become a cultural artefact many refer to as a pioneering moment but few have engaged with it as a historical, cultural, and political artefact worth revisiting as a living and breathing archive. This workshop will bring together academics, students, journalists, and creatives to reinvigorate the newspaper towards a longer project which will culminate in a book that will revisit Imvo through scholarly and creative responses. This workshop will include collective close reading of the newspaper (those available), analyses of changes in the language used over time, as well as a film screening which situates the newspaper within a broader intellectual tradition of the world of letters in the southern African region. In a context where English dominates public culture, it has become harder to imagine that South Africa once had a rich culture of multilingual newspapers such as Imvo as well as other newspapers that came later, such as Ilanga lase Natali, The Bantu World, and Koranta ea Becoana. This workshop aims to challenge this narrowing of public culture by taking seriously the newspaper as a cultural artefact which can reinvigorate contemporary public culture.                                                              * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *             Founded in 2012, the African Critical Inquiry Programme (ACIP) is a partnership between the Centre for Humanities Research at University of the Western Cape in Cape Town and the Laney Graduate School of Emory University in Atlanta. Supported by donations to the Ivan Karp and Corinne Kratz Fund, the ACIP fosters thinking and working across public cultural institutions, across disciplines and fields, and across generations. It seeks to advance inquiry and debate about the roles and practice of public culture, public cultural institutions, and public scholarship in shaping identities and society in Africa through an annual ACIP workshop and through the Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards, which support African doctoral students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences enrolled at South African universities.             Information about applying to organize the 2027 ACIP workshop and for the 2026 Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards will be available in November 2025. The deadline for both workshop applications and student applications is 1 May 2026.             For further information, see http://www.gs.emory.edu/about/special/acip.html and https://www.facebook.com/ivan.karp.corinne.kratz.fund. • CFP: MAAAS 2025: Democracy and Environmental Justice
MAAAS 2025: Democracy and Environmental Justice October 10-11, 2025 Lincoln University Jefferson City, MO   The Mid-America Alliance for African Studies (MAAAS) in collaboration with the Kansas African Studies Center at the University of Kansas, will hold its 2025 conference at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO on October 10-11. Although we invite scholars to submit proposals for individual papers or panels on any topic, we especially welcome contributions that address the conference theme of Democracy and Environmental Justice.  How do struggles for environmental justice intersect with concerns about democracy? Among other intersections, both face threats from the inordinate power that multinational and transnational corporations have exercised over African communities, from representative councils to nation state and regional government bodies. These corporations and neo-colonial governments deploy their power to undermine any regulation, such as environmental protection via democratic process, that would impede their exploitation of natural resources. What are the impacts of and responses to this ongoing attack on Africa and the Diaspora? We invite scholars interested in Africana Studies from all disciplines to participant at this conference. Interested scholars should submit a 250-word abstract or panel description by July 31st to MAAAS at  MAAASpp@gmail.com. Registration Information Coming Soon on MAAAS-2025-Conference.   For additional information, please contact: Elizabeth Chunda, MAAAS President (2025) Elizabethchunda@ku.edu

  • Second Call for Papers | "Disappearances and Preservations" | World History Bulletin | Spring/Summer
World History Bulletin is seeking quality research essays, experiential learning case studies, and classroom activities for inclusion in its upcoming Spring/Summer 2025 issue, “Disappearances and Preservations in World History.” The issue will explore how our understanding of the past evolves as we revisit, reconsider, and preserve history for future generations. The theme of “Disappearances and Preservations” raises important questions about who determines what is preserved and what is allowed to disappear, the criteria used to ensure preservation, the motives which inform disappearance or preservation, the evolution of techniques of preservation, the affect of the loss of historical material on future studies, and how selective preservation can prejudice current historical studies. The Bulletin is interested in submissions covering a range of topics related to the theme of disappearances and preservations, including: Suppressing Histories. Studying the efforts of regimes to erase or suppress histories which contradict official narratives. Preservation of Historical Memory. The exploration of how histories are documented and by whom.  Recovering Histories. Examining histories forgotten or “disappeared” and how they might be recovered.   Techniques used in the classroom to introduce and explore disappearances and preservations as part of wider political and sociocultural phenomena.   Historiographies of theories and practice concerned with disappearances and preservations in world history. World History Bulletin therefore invites contributions to a thematic issue on disappearances and preservations in world history. We are especially interested in articles that share novel research or historiographical perspectives which explore the wider economic, sociocultural, and/or political circumstances which result in disappearance or preservation; present innovative/experiential teaching at all levels that employs techniques related to disappearances and preservations in world history; or explore the connection between student engagement and world history as a result of coursework related to the theme “disappearances and preservations.”  We also welcome short interviews with designers, artists, writers, and scholars and small roundtables on a book, film, or other work. Submission Guidelines: Research and pedagogical articles should range between 1,500 and 6,000 words in length, including endnote text. The Bulletin accepts submissions which adhere to the style, format, and documentation requirements as outlined in the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. The Bulletin uses endnote citations, rather than footnote citations. Text of submissions should be double-spaced, rendered in 12-point Times New Roman font, and spelled according to American English standard usage (e.g., favorite, rather than favourite). Submissions should be written in past tense, rather than the literary present, and passive voice should be avoided. Submission Deadline: July 15, 2025 Essays and questions should be directed to Joseph M. Snyder, Editor-in-chief of World History Bulletin, at bulletin@thewha.org. Contact Information Joseph M.
